Kronos Quartet and Trio Da Kali are available for touring performances in summer 2017. The program will illuminate the music and performance styles of the Mande griots from southern Mali by reviving lost songs and bringing a contemporary twist to the ancient art form.
Handpicked by the Aga Khan Music Initiative and renowned ethnomusicologist Lucy Durán to develop this project with Kronos, Trio Da Kali features an all-star meeting of West African musicians who come from long lines of distinguished griots – singer Hawa Kasse Mady Diabaté (daughter of Kasse Mady Diabaté), balafon player Fodé Lassana Diabaté (son of Djelisory Diabaté), and bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté (eldest son of Bassekou Kouyaté). David Harrington, artistic director of the San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet, described the collaboration as “one of the most beautiful that Kronos has had in our first 40 years.”
Kronos and Trio Da Kali have previously performed together at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, Cal Performances at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. Featuring arrangements by Diabaté, Durán, and frequent Kronos collaborator Jacob Garchik, the repertoire includes “Namanike,” “Ladilikan,” “Tita,” and “Lila Bambo,” among others.
